The First Signs of a Witch

SECOND PLACE WINNER:

Name: Oliver Jener-O'Shea
Story:

"Luna! Come quick! There is a Pooka out here!"

There was only one person that loved chasing after magical creatures more than Larry and Linda Lovegood, and that was their 6-year-old daughter, Luna. Luna ran to the front door and burst out onto the lawn.

"Where is it?" Luna impatiently asked her parents.

Mr. Lovegood had taken his wand out from behind his ear. "See that moss-covered stone in front of the rose bush? Watch this!"

"DESPLAYUS!" Thousands of brilliant strands of light, each one the width of a hair, shot towards the stone and the Pooka resumed its natural form, a miniature goat, only a foot tall, about the size of a small dog. The Pooka was covered in a thick coat of gleaming orange hair. It had the same brilliant shine as the lock of Unicorn's hair that Luna's mother had gotten her, except the Pooka's odd orange colouring made it even more enchanting for Luna. However, the eyes were the most amazing feature of the animal. They were orange as well but seemed to gradually change to almost a red and then back through orange almost to a yellow. Its eyes were so full of life as they darted from Larry to Linda to Luna, gazing at each of them.

Luna looked at her mum who nodded, reading Luna's mind. She ran for the Pooka, whom she decided she would call Pokey, and picked him up and hugged him on the grass as Linda explained about the creature.

"The Pooka is an ancient shape shifting creature from Ireland. It is filled with ancient magic: they can change their shape as you saw. Unfortunately, another magical creature called a Gruagach is hunting them down trying to kill them all. Hopefully, this little fella will stay around here where he's safe."

Luna had grown quite attached to Pokey and spent all afternoon playing with him. She didn't want to leave him when she was called into dinner. However, her parents promised that they would keep an eye on him overnight and she could play with him tomorrow. She grudgingly accepted, ate dinner and went to bed.

Luna got up very early the next day, very excited about playing with her newest friend. It was about six thirty in the morning and Luna knew her parents were still asleep so she tiptoed past their room, into the hallway, and out of the house.

What was on the lawn where she left the Pooka yesterday shocked her enough that she screamed. The Pooka lay on the grass in a pool of blood, dead. It had been stabbed in the side and the wooden spike was half hanging out of the wound. Its beady eyes were open but glazed over as if a fog had moved in, now that Pokey wasn't using his eyes.

Luna's parents both appeared at the door, apparently awoken by their daughter's scream. Luna had already moved over to where the little creature lay. She picked him up and hugged him around the neck. She started to cry and tears were flowing freely down the side of her cheeks. One tear dropped off her chin but instead of falling into the fur of the Pooka, it hung in midair and began to glow. The tear then began to stretch magically into a strand of light that the Lovegoods had seen yesterday when Luna's dad performed the spell to reveal the Pooka. Luna had stopped crying but more tears left her cheeks and were similarly glowing and stretching into thin strands that were wrapping around the wooden spike that was sticking out of the creature's side. The strands lifted the spike out of the Pooka and more strands came and stitched the wound closed. The Pooka's eyes drained away the fog and where suddenly full of life again, shining the brilliant orange. Larry and Linda Lovegood couldn't believe what they were seeing. They had never seen or even heard of the magic that Luna was performing right in front of them.

Pokey had gotten up as Luna hugged him and cried again, this time though, they were tears of joy. Luna had brought him back and she had made one of her friends for life.
